The Piscataquis Valley Fair proudly announces their 2012 Outstanding Farm Family is being dedicated to long-time dairy farmer and livestock dealer, Daniel O. Hurd, Jr. of Dover-Foxcroft.
A 2nd generation farmer, Dan followed in his father's foot-steps. He began buying and selling cattle at the age of 15... travelling one day a week to towns in Aroostook County and then finishing out the rest of the week in the local areas. Most of these trips were made in the company of his great friend Everett Underhill, Sr. from whom he learned a great deal about "the fine art of cattle trading" !!
At the age of 19, Dan and his father formed a business partnership. And then of course there were the weekly auctions ----- Razor Crossmans, Tilton's, Clark's......Dan put together herds of cattle from all his purchases for several out - of - state dealers in PA, NY , NH, and VT for years.
At one time, 300 cows were being milked on 4 separate farms: 40 in Garland, 60 in Bradford, 100 on Shaw Rd. and 100 on Bear Hill Rd. both in Dover. Shaw Rd. farm was sold in early 2000's. A barn fire in 2006 ceased dairy operations in Bradford. The Bear Hill Rd. farm remains in operation today with upwards of 75 head milking there. In 1990 he went into partnership with his brother Richard, who resides at the old family farm in Bradford.
Dan maintains a herd of young stock bulls at the Bradford farm for "letting- out" during breeding season to those farmers who don't care to keep one on hand. He also raises 50 or so replacement heifers each year. The daily "excitement of wheeling & dealing" has dwindled down to basically 2 days a week now (unless he receives a phone call) as the economy and market has forced so many farms out - of - business.
Dan will tell you "I was always lucky to get up in the morning and go to a job that I enjoyed!" He wanted to farm all his life....and that is exactly what he has done!!
Dan has a son, a daughter and 2 step - sons; along with 11 grandchildren. He also has 2 brothers. We wish Dan many more years in the business and look forward to seeing him on the fairgrounds this year as usual..
